Die jüngeren kennen den Dienst vermutlich gar nicht mehr, die älteren erinnern sich vielleicht: In den frühen 90ern, also in einer Zeit, in der es noch nicht für jeden selbstverständlich war, einen (vollwertigen) Internetzugang zu haben, gab es einen Dienst namens agora. Der hatte den Zweck, Webseiten per E-Mail abzurufen. Man schickte eine formalisierte Anforderung mit einem Anforderungsbefehl im Betreff und maximal drei URLs in der E-Mail an so einen Dienst, und bald darauf kam für jeden URL eine Antwort-Mail zurück, die die angeforderte Webseite enthielt. (OK, „bald darauf” ist relativ — es konnte durchaus schonmal 24 bis 48 Stunden dauern.)
Mittlerweile hat man ja einen mehr oder weniger schnellen Internetzugang und kann alle IP-basierten Dienste frei nutzen. Daher braucht man diese umständliche Methode heute eigentlich nicht mehr. Oder vielleicht doch?
Gestern erhielt ich eine E-Mail aus Syrien. Dort beschrieb mir ein syrischer Bürger, wie es da gerade mit den Internetverbindungen aussieht, insbesondere mit den Möglichkeiten unbeobachteter und unzensierter Kommunikation. Darin heißt es, vor etwa einem Monat seien iranische Experten ins Land geholt worden, um in einer Telekommunikationszentrale in Damaskus, über die wohl aller syrischer Internet-Traffic zwangsweise läuft, diverse Geräte zu installieren. Gesehen worden seien ein FortisNet-Gerät (FortisNet ist auf Firewalls spezialisiert) und eine unbekannte Anzahl von Servern zur Paketanalyse (deep packet inspection). Er schreibt unter anderem (relativ freie Übersetzung von mir):
[...] Wir haben zu den meisten https-basierten Websites keinen Zugang mehr, dazu gehören auch Facebook und Twitter. Versuche, zu diesen Sites zu verbinden, bringen entweder „Zugriff verweigert” oder einen Timeout. [...] Die Regierung kann Skype-Anrufe und Chats verfolgen. Auf Crypto-Chat kommen wir nicht mehr drauf. Wir wissen nicht, welche anderen Messaging-Systeme unter Beobachtung stehen.
Hotmail ist geschlossen. Yahoo funktioniert noch, GMail nicht immer, hat vielleicht mit https zu tun ...
I2p funktioniert nicht. Tor funktioniert nicht. VPNs funktionieren nicht, weder PPtP noch OpenVPN, wir haben da verschiedenste Konfigurationen durchprobiert. [...] Proxy-Verbindungen funktionieren nicht. [...] Tunnels gehen überhaupt nicht. [...]
Irgendwelche Ideen?
Und ich hatte eine. Der Agora von damals, aber mit mindestens einer wichtigen Zusatzfunktion: Er muß die E-Mails verschlüsselt empfangen und versenden können. Leider scheint die Benutzung von gnupg in Syrien oder zumindest bei meinem E-Mail-Kontakt nicht üblich zu sein. Da ist wohl Nachhilfe erforderlich.
Da ich mit meinen Konzentrationsproblemen die Idee weder ausarbeiten noch programmieren kann, habe ich einfach mal ein Pad dazu [Update] Link nach Hinweis von Silent-Bob korrigiert. [/Update] eröffnet und dieses auf Twitter, identi.ca und Google+ verbreitet. Und tatsächlich fanden sich ein paar Leute, die die Idee weiterentwickelten (besonderen Dank an den stillen Bob und SunTsu!). Ich würde mich wahnsinnig freuen, wenn die Idee funktioniert und dabei helfen kann, Zensur zu umgehen!
The younger ones may not remember this service, the older ones may: In the early 90's, when it was not yet usual for everyone to have full internet access, there was a service called agora. It was made for requesting web pages by email. You sent a formalized email, a request command in the subject and a maximum of three URLs in the body to such a service, and soon you received an email for each URL that included the requested web page. (OK, „soon” is a relative value here, often you had to wait 24 to 48 hours.)
In the meantime we have more or less fast internet access and can use all ip based services freely. Because of this nobody needs this complicated method anymore. Really nobody?
Yesterday I received an email from Syria. In this a Syrian described their current problems with their internet connections, especially with the possibilities of unwatched and uncensored communication. He says that about one month ago the Syrian government had brought in Iranian experts to install some appliances in the communication establishment building in Damascus. As far as they know, all internet communications from Syria are forced to be routed through this building. Technicians had seen a FortisNet device (FortisNet is specialized on firewalls) and an unknown number of servers meant for deep packet analysis. He wrote:
We no longer have access to most HTTPS sites, including Facebook and Twitter. Attempts to connect to the sites result in either an Access Denied message, or a timeout.
The Gov't can now listen in on Skype calls and chat. We have attempted to use CryptoChat, but it won't connect. We do not know what other messaging systems are under surveillance.
Hotmail is closed. Yahoo is still working, although we are not sure about Gmail, Probably has to do with HTTPS usage...
I2p is not working. Tor is not working. VPNs are not working (Both PPtP and OpenVPN, using a multitude of different configs), [...]
Proxy connections aren't working. [...]
Tunnels won't work at all.
Any ideas?
And I got one. This agora from then, but with at minimum one important addictional function: It must be able to receive and send encrypted emails. Unfortunately the use of gnupg seems not very usual in Syria or at least by the people I hold contact to. I guess there is a need of some coaching.
Because of my concentration problems I cannot develop the idea or write the necessary software. So I opened a Pad about New Agora [Update] link corrected after Silent-Bob's comment [/Update] and spreaded the word on Twitter, identi.ca and Google+. And really, some people found the way to the pad and offered additional ideas and concepts (special thanks to Silent Bob and SunTsu!). I'd be very delighted if this idea works and can help to circumvent censorship!
